Nerstrand-Big Woods State Park near Faribault preserves an outlying stand of the Big Woods, the large contiguous forest that once covered much of southeastern Minnesota before settlers began clearing farmland in the 1840s. Its name also nods to Nedstrand in Norway. Aside from a small waterfall, the forest itself is the park's defining feature.
