Monson Lake State Park was originally established as a memorial to thirteen Swedish American pioneers killed during the 1862 Dakota War, west of Sunburg. Though its area nearly doubled in 2009, it remains one of Minnesota's smallest state parks, seasonally staffed and managed from nearby Sibley State Park. A district of 1930s New Deal structures here is on the National Register of Historic Places.
