Mille Lacs Kathio State Park on Mille Lacs Lake preserves 19 identified archaeological sites, among the most significant collections in Minnesota, documenting Dakota habitation and mound-building dating back to 3000 BC. Oral tradition holds that Ojibwe people took control of the area from the Dakota in battle as both groups shifted territory in the 18th century.
