About Lake Maria State Park
Lake Maria State Park was created west of Monticello in 1963 to give the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area a nearby wilderness experience, preserving a remnant of the Big Woods across a hilly, glacially formed landscape of lakes and wetlands. Its amenities favor hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders, so it sees lighter use than other parks near the metro.
