Flandrau State Park lies along the Cottonwood River next to New Ulm, renamed in 1945 for Charles Eugene Flandrau, who led the town's defense in the 1862 Dakota War. CCC and WPA crews built rustic-style structures here echoing New Ulm's German heritage; the WPA barracks later housed German POWs as Camp New Ulm in World War II. The WPA's reservoir dam was removed in 1995 after flood damage.
