About Savanna Portage State Park
Savanna Portage State Park, established in 1961, preserves the historic Savanna Portage, a difficult six-mile trail that Native Americans and later European fur traders used for centuries to cross the divide between the Mississippi River and Lake Superior watersheds. The route was a vital link between the two water systems and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
