Jay Cooke State Park protects the lower Saint Louis River about 10 miles southwest of Duluth and ranks among Minnesota's ten most-visited state parks. Its western half holds part of a rocky 13-mile gorge that early travelers bypassed via the historic Grand Portage. It's named for financier Jay Cooke, who built a nearby power plant still in use.
