Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park preserves the Soudan Underground Mine on the south shore of Lake Vermilion, known as Minnesota's oldest, deepest, and richest iron mine. The former mine, once home to the Soudan Underground Laboratory, is designated a National Historic Landmark.
