About Itasca State Park

Itasca State Park contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River, identified by explorer Henry Schoolcraft in 1832, and spans nearly 32,700 acres north of Park Rapids. Established by the Minnesota Legislature in 1891, it is the state's oldest park and the second-oldest in the country after Niagara Falls State Park. About 500,000 people visit each year.
