Big Bog State Recreation Area covers 9,459 acres of swamp, bog, and upland "islands" north of Waskish, one of the newest units in the Minnesota state park system. Local grassroots efforts began the project in 2002, and it officially opened as a state recreation area in June 2006. The surrounding Big Bog region is largely unpopulated aside from the small community of Waskish.
